The birthplace of Agatha Christie
The world's bestselling crime author, Agatha Christie, was born in Torquay and remained on the English Riviera for much of her life, writing her first novel whilst working at the Dispensary in the temporary war hospital at Torquay Town Hall.
She maintained close links with the English Riviera throughout her life, and as a result of her love and extensive knowledge of the area, many of her books were either set locally or inspired by the surrounding Devon scenery.
As a result, there are plenty of Agatha Christie Things To Do, from guided tours to visiting her holiday home Greenway. And, don't forget the Agatha Christie Festival which takes place every year in September, celebrating all things from the Queen of Crime!
England's Seafood Coast
Named England’s Seafood Coast for good reason, the English Riviera is home to the UK’s finest seafood and the world-famous Brixham Fish Market, where some of the nation’s best chefs source their seafood. The Fish Market is the beating heart of England’s Seafood Coast. Each year over £40million worth of fish is landed, making Brixham the biggest fishing port in England by value.
Every year, England's Seafood FEAST takes over the Bay, celebrating the vast array of fresh seafood found here on the English Riviera.
Cockington Court, Country Park and Village
Many villages lay claim to being picturesque, but the delightful Devon village of Cockington is the real deal. Take a walk back in time along Cockington’s narrow lanes, lined with thatched houses and you’ll experience a quiet charm that is quintessentially English.
Everything about Cockington oozes with history – there’s a water mill, a forge and even the cricket pitch was once a medieval deer park. The impressive Cockington Court sits in the middle, surrounded by over 400 acres of country park and a series of picturesque lakes. The court now hosts a series of local artisan makers from blacksmiths to chocolate makers!
It’s an unforgettable place to stay and perfect for romantic breaks and unforgettable dog-friendly holidays.
Brixham's Art Murals
Brixham is fast becoming the cultural hub of Devon as incredible art murals take over the town.
From the harbour, through the town and up to Bolton Street there are over 15 full size murals painted on the side of buildings, from heritage trawlers to pirate maps, all the murals are themed around Brixham's strong fishing heritage, and add to Brixham’s reputation as an arts, crafts and heritage hub.
These murals are a quirky addition to Brixham's quaintness and individuality, and we would highly recommend a visit to Brixham to spot these hidden gems. As well as spotting these new artworks, you’ll be spoilt with independent shops, art galleries, quality places to eat and drink and peaceful walks around the harbour.
Mueseums and Heritage Attractions
Museum lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring the history, culture and heritage of the English Riviera. Torre Abbey Museum, Torquay Museum and Brixham Heritage Museum are all excellent attractions and should definitely be included on any holiday itinerary.

In Torquay, there's the quaint Little Theatre, which is in a converted church, Babbacombe Theatre, which is sat atop a stunning cliff-top promenade, and the famous Princess Theatre, which features the very best touring shows.
