5 November 2026: Following a thorough recruitment process, the English Riviera BID Company is delighted to announce the appointment of James Hull as its new Chief Executive.
James will take up the position on 1 January 2027, following the retirement of Carolyn Custerson. He lives in Torquay with his family and brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and local knowledge to the role.
James is well known across the resort and has already made a significant contribution to our tourism industry. Many will know him from his 14 years as General Manager at the multi award-winning Kents Cavern. During his time there, he was responsible for all aspects of the business, and achieved notable growth.
James has extensive experience in the visitor attraction and tourism sector. As Chair of the English Riviera Attractions Partnership from 2018 to 2022, he championed the benefits of collective marketing and partnership working, helping to promote the resort and attract more visitors throughout the year.
James has also been a Trustee of Torquay Museum and fully recognises the unique opportunities that the Agatha Christie legacy and UNESCO Global Geopark status give us.
Most recently, James has held the position of General Manager at House of Marbles, where he led strategic change across the business, strengthening international trade opportunities and improving global logistics.
James Hull said: “It is a great honour to be appointed Chief Executive of the English Riviera BID Company, and I am really looking forward to taking on this new challenge.
“Having watched the development of the ERBID over many years under Carolyn’s leadership, I have seen the significant contribution it has made to raising the profile of the English Riviera, supporting local businesses and strengthening the destination. Carolyn and the team have built a strong foundation, and I am keen to build on that success as we look towards the next chapter.
“The English Riviera is an incredibly rich asset as a holiday destination, and there is so much to celebrate, but also considerable potential for further development. Having worked in tourism for over 30 years, I understand the importance of bringing businesses and partners together, sharing a vision and working collectively. I believe exciting opportunities lie ahead to attract new audiences, encourage year-round visitation and ensure the English Riviera continues to thrive.
“I look forward to working with the ERBID team and Board, levy payers, partners and the wider tourism industry to build on what has already been achieved and help reach the full potential of this fantastic destination.”
Chris Hart, Chair of the English Riviera BID Company, said: “With a deep understanding of English Riviera tourism, a proven track record and a long-standing connection to the area, James is exceptionally well placed to lead on the delivery of the ERBID3 Business Plan. We are delighted that he will be taking the organisation into its next phase and helping to drive the destination forward.”
