The English Riviera makes a stunning honeymoon destination and one that can be as indulgent or as down-to-earth as you'd like. South Devon's beautiful bay is spectacularly picturesque and unquestionably romantic. People have been bringing that special someone to Torbay for generations and indeed Babbacombe became especially popular with post -war honeymoon couples. They were understandably attracted by the romantic panorama from the highest cliff top promenade in England. Decades later, the views are just as enchanting and still being enjoyed by amorous lovers drawn to the lovely corner of the West Country. So, whether you have tied the knot in Torbay or are enjoying the first week or two of married life at the seaside, this is the perfect place to begin the rest of your life together.
Agatha Christie spent her honeymoon at the Grand Hotel in 1914 and the elegant Victorian hotel still makes a wonderful place to start married life. There's even an Agatha Christie Suite you can stay in, decorated in a style that reflects her literary prowess. The views from the swimming pool terrace or the Compass Lounge have to be some of the most romantic in the world. Another hotel with stunning views over the South Devon coastline is the Orestone Manor Hotel, once the home of John Callcott Horsley, who designed the world's first ever Christmas card. For the ultimate in luxury, why not book the Garden Suite, which enjoys a large private terrace, complete with a Jacuzzi hot tub and private dining area.
For a spot of luxury in beautiful Babbacombe Bay, what about checking in to one of the seriously chic rooms, suites, cottages or designer beach huts at the Cary Arms. Described by the Sunday Times as one of Top 100 British Hotels, their Romantic Hideaway Experience includes two nights in a luxury sea facing room with a private balcony, Chef’s favourite seaside three-course candlelit dinner, a continental champagne breakfast in bed and a Thalgo spa treatment.
There are endless other choices for the perfect Honeymoon, including The Imperial Hotel in Torquay, the Berry Head Hotel in Brixham and The Osborne Hotel in Meadfoot, all of which have stunning views out across the Bay. There’s no shortage of great places to eat either. What about treating that special someone to a meal at The Elephant on Torquay harbourside, which was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star. Chef and owner Simon Hulstone cooks up a range of culinary delights, with ingredients sourced locally and sustainably, many from their dedicated farm in Brixham.
Another top tip for a romantic evening meal is The Orange Tree, tucked away just a few steps from Torquay harbour. Sharon and Bernd Wolf host the perfect evening, with elegant surroundings, crisp white table linen and candlelight, while the dedicated team of chefs showcase the best culinary flavours the Westcountry has to offer. Meanwhile no romantic trip to the English Riviera would be complete without sampling some delicious seafood. Why not book into either of Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish Restaurants in Torquay or Brixham, or the very popular Number 7 Bistro in Torquay.
Of course, there’s plenty to do in Torbay for honeymooning couples. Walk the coastal path, take a boat trip to Dartmouth, treat yourself to a spa or just enjoy a glass of something fizzy together as the sun sets over the Bay. Treat yourselves, it’s your special holiday!
