Reach Outdoors was started by three long term friends; Ashley Hone, Rachel Mayhew and Richard Hanbury. Now, after five wonderful years they have a team of 16 enthusiastic full time instructors. They love sharing adventures with both locals and visitors to the bay. When you book onto a session with Reach Outdoors you can expect a very warm welcome. They pride themselves on being able to support people to achieve things that they may not have thought possible. They are able to do this by ensuring that the participant is always in control and makes the choices on what they would like to experience. If they want to try something a bit more adventurous then they are there to support them and ensure the customer stays safe at the same time. Their equipment is first class, instructors are top notch, the English Riviera provides the playground.... and there lies the perfect combination. Reach Outdoors is a multi-award winning adventure provider - picking up multiple local, regional and national awards.

Since setting up the business in 2012, with their first customers coming a year later, you will see Reach Outdoors operating all over Torbay and beyond! The main hub for the business is at Goodrington Sands but a favourite spot is definitely Anstey’s Cove, due to the opportunities it presents for kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and coasteering. Anstey’s Cove is a mecca for outdoor activity on the English Riviera.

Outdoor activities in Devon

Reach Outdoors is essentially sea based, outdoor activity for everyone in Devon! The services are available to individuals or groups of all shapes, sizes and ages. The idea is to encourage people to do fun activities with the amazing natural environment that the English Riviera has to offer in abundance.

Apart from Anstey’s Cove, Rich and his team hang out quite a bit at Goodrington Sands, which is just a vibrant hub of activity and the perfect base for outdoor activities in Devon. There's plenty to do from sunbathing to Splashdown Waterpark. If you're looking for an organised tour then we take groups Coasteering, Paddle Boarding or Kayaking, around the whole of the bay, including sheltered little spots such as Anstey’s Cove. Our instructors are great at coaching, guiding and playing some fun games on the water which are enjoyed by both children and adults. If you'd prefer you can just hire and enjoy at your own leisurely pace.

Meet Rich, the man behind the kayak

You only get out of life, what you are prepared to put in - that is something that Rich lives by and is something which has quickly become infectious with his customer and his team sharing the same belief!

Rich hasn’t always been kayak obsessed, but now he absolutely loves what he does. Rich explains that “The English Riviera is an amazing place. We have a popular tourist destination providing lots of people from all backgrounds looking for adventure.”

Despite the English Riviera being a largely urban destination it benefits from its remote surroundings meaning you can experience the bars, restaurants and other busy attractions or within five minutes you can escape it all and find a beach all to yourself. In terms of our work, it’s fantastic, we have amazing coastline and moorlands right on our doorstep. It doesn't get much better in the whole of the UK, to be honest.

So, what’s your favourite spot in the Bay, Rich? Thatcher’s Rock, a short paddle from Meadfoot Beach. It’s great to paddle around the Island. The small trees and shrubs on the top make it look like a miniature Island. It always reminds me of Tracy Island off the Thunderbirds!

Rich isn’t always on the water (as much as he’d love to!) Outside of work, he enjoys spending lots of time with the family and loves to go surfing; Bantham particularly provides a great wave and is only a short drive away from the English Riviera.

Paddle boards for hire!

If you want an activity filled holiday in Devon but don’t want to join a group or even take a guided tour, don’t forget you can even hire paddle boards from Reach Outdoors. Paddle boarding has quickly become an amazing way to spend time on the sea at the same time as getting fit and getting an all round tan, winner!

Please contact Rich at Reach Outdoors for more information about hiring paddle boards or any other activity mentioned here.

Already a paddle board champion and want to book your trip to Anstey’s Cove? Great! Check out our accommodation options and come and meet Rich.
