About
Mark Aldridge and Gray Robert Brown, the presenters of The Swinging Christies podcast, host an illustrated talk containing six fascinating insights into Christie's 1960s writing that didn't make it into the show...
This fun fringe event will be taking place in the Corinthian Room at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club with the kind permission of the Commodore. The building has a unique connection to Agatha Christie, as her father Frederick Miller was a prominent member of the club. Outside on the wall you will be able to spot one of the Agatha Christie Mile plaques, marking this connection. This is a unique opportunity to go inside what is usually a private members club.
As you will see, the club boasts stunning views out across the Bay and in Agatha’s youth, Beacon Cove (below) was the ladies bathing beach where she learnt to swim. In her autobiography she says "although the beach was properly invisible from the Club windows, the sea around the raft was not, and, according to my father, a good many of the gentlemen spent their time with opera glasses enjoying the sight of female figures displayed in what they hopefully thought of as almost a state of nudity! I don't think we can have been sexually very appealing in those shapeless garments."
The bar will be open from 4pm for you to buy a drink before the talk starts at 4.30pm. The talk will end by 5.30pm to allow people coming on the AB Sea Murders to get some food before the boat departs. There are various options around the harbourside, from restaurants to fish and chip shops.
Please note, due to the subject matter, this talk is suitable for people aged 13 and over.
