About
THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE ENGLISH RIVIERA WALKING FESTIVAL
Would you like to learn how to sketch from a professional artist?
Join artist James Murch www.jamesmurch.com – a semi-finalist in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year and current Artist in Residence at Torre Abbey. This walking tour offers guests a unique opportunity to learn from James in a location that has been instrumental in his artistic development.
At the meeting point, you’ll receive a starter sketch kit (notepad, pencil, viewfinder, and eraser), or you can purchase the kit in advance using this link https://payhip.com/b/8V4hd James will explain how to use the kit and share expert tips to help you capture the beauty of your surroundings. You’ll also learn techniques like squinting and using the viewfinder to simplify your view and focus on key details.
Stopping at various scenic points along the route, you’ll explore light and shade – the building blocks of great sketches – and practice capturing the natural beauty around you in the plein air tradition, practiced by all the best landscape artists.
By the end of the tour, you might have discovered your inner Van Gogh!
- Sketch in the inspiring surroundings of Cockington Court, with its ancient arboretum, apple orchard, lakes, woodland, and sweeping sea views.
- Energise your creativity with plein air sketching, working directly in the open air to capture the natural beauty of the landscape.
- Learn techniques to simplify your view and focus on light and shade for dynamic and expressive sketches.
- Reward yourself at the end the tour with a well-earned drink at The Drum, a traditional English pub in the heart of the village
