Pubs & Inns
Many country pubs and inns in South Devon also offer accommodation, while serving fresh, home-cooked local food and local Devon craft beers and wines. If you’re here for a short break and don’t want to book into a hotel, why not try a traditional inn, for a comfy, home-from-home feel, and a warm Devon welcome? Just mind your head on those low beams!
If there’s one thing that really makes a holiday special, it’s discovering a really good Devon pub or inn where you can base your stay. From traditional country inns with roaring fires to ultra-trendy gastro-bars where the food’s the star, a good pub or bar is at the heart of a great British holiday. Fortunately, in Devon we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to top quality pubs and inns, many with stunning sea and harbour views where you can enjoy a year-round short break.
Brimming with coastal charm, the Cary Arms and Spa situated on the beach at Babbacombe combines all the values of a classic English inn with the style and comfort of the best luxury hotels in Devon, plus one of the best sea views on the English Riviera. The Cary Arms is also a very dog-friendly Devon inn.
Scattered across the English Riviera are some of the finest traditional pubs and inns you’ll discover anywhere. Many pubs and inns in Devon have been here for hundreds of years. And if you believe the stories, many of them are haunted, too! The Thatched Tavern is a fine example of a beautiful, thatched building dating back to the 17th century; it’s a traditional Devon pub situated on the outskirts of Torquay with spectacular coastal walking on your doorstep and a choice of dining in either the stylish restaurant or cosy bar area.
Situated just a short drive from Brixham, the Railway Inn has been steeped in in Devon history since the 1800s, having been originally built as a railway hotel. Situated next to the pretty Churston Station, which serves the idyllic Paignton to Kingswear Steam Railway Line, the Railway Inn has become a very popular place to stay for Agatha Christie fans. The Queen of Crime’s riverside residence at Greenway, now run by the National Trust, is just 2 miles away.
Many local pubs and inns are dog-friendly, so there’s no reason why your four-legged friend shouldn’t enjoy a few days away in the English Riviera too.
