About

Restaurant 1881 named after the year The Grand Hotel was built sits in an enviable position on the UNESCO English Riviera with stunning views across the bay.  A landmark hotel and steeped in a wealth of history it has been privileged to have hosted an array of famous faces over the years.

Enjoy AA rosette dining in Torquay in our elegant Restaurant 1881, or for more informal dining with stunning views across the bay we offer the Compass Lounge.

You’ll find dishes with influences from around the world, plus traditional British favourites, including ‘proper’ puddings – all guaranteed to make your mouth water. There is also a superb Sunday Lunch with options to suit the whole family and a real draw for locals who enjoy a fantastic traditional Sunday Roast.

Whether you choose to dine more formally in our AA rosette Restaurant 1881, or relax with a light meal, a chilled glass of wine or indulge in a delicious Devonshire cream tea in our Compass Lounge and brasserie whilst you enjoy the wonderful views across the bay. We are lucky to have some of the best ingredients right on our doorstep, whether that’s locally caught seafood, fresh seasonal vegetables, or delicious local beef, lamb or chicken.

A Fine Dining Experience

We are experts in delivering experiences from fine dining to groups and tours.  The 1881 Restaurant is our main dining room, breakfast room and can double up for the most spectacular room for weddings or conferences.  This period decor really does hold the moment and create the right atmosphere for all occasions.

Our chefs use locally sourced produce and have a good understanding of the seasons, meaning you only get the best quality ingredients.  We do use a number of ingredients that are classed as allergens, however our teams are highly trained to work with these to make sure you are safe in the knowing when you dine with us.  Whilst we can’t 100% guarantee that the dish is allergen-free, we have most definitely made the process safer, giving you more confidence and reassurance.
