The Dartmouth Steam Railway travels seven miles along the most spectacular South Devon coast. It follows the Dart Valley, a designated area of outstanding beauty. Stations at Goodrington Sands, Churston and Kingswear. Visit www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk for more details.
The paddle steamer Kingswear Castle is the last remaining coal-fired paddle steamer in operation in the UK today. She was built in 1924 at Philip & Son of Dartmouth and plied her trade between Totnes and Dartmouth until 1965. In her heyday when this impressive ship was the life blood of the river Dart, she could carry almost 500 passengers. Enjoy a nostalgic cruise along the lower reaches of the river Dart in this historic vessel. Visit: www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk for more details.
Greenway House, an Agatha Christie residence, is just three miles from Raddicombe Lodge, and is easy to access via a minor road down to Galmpton and then along to Greenway. Advance booking for car parking is essential; those arriving by 'green' means will have slots made available to see this unique and magical property.
Coleton Fishacre, the country home of the D'Oyly Carte family. Travel back in time to the jazz age. This most evocative of country homes was built in the Arts & Crafts style, and is imbued with Art Deco elegance. A light, joyful atmosphere fills the rooms, and music plays, echoing the family's Gilbert and Sullivan connections. You can get an insight into 1920s life 'upstairs and downstairs' from the glamorous saloon and the airy servants' rooms. In the RHS accredited garden viewpoints give enticing glimpses out to sea, paths weave through glades past tranquil ponds, and tender plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and New Zealand thrive in the moist and sheltered valley.
Walking holidays in Devon
Are you walking the South West Coastpath or the Dart Trail? Raddicombe Lodge is two miles from Brixham and Dartmouth in South Devon. The lodge is close to the South West Coast Path, which leads to tucked away coves, harbour towns and estuaries – some of the most superb scenery to be found anywhere in Britain. We are also close to the River Dart Trail which runs alongside the River Dart from Kingswear, via Greenway and Galmpton towards Totnes.
The lodge is a short journey from Dartmoor, where you are spoilt for choice by the many varied walking opportunities, from the open moorland to picturesque river valleys.
April, May and June are our favorite months for walking. Glorious carpets of bluebells and their heady scent, new born lambs running in the fields, walking at this time of year leaves you with a feeling of fresh vitality. What a great time to enjoy walking here in Devon. We would also recommend walking breaks in September when the summer rush is over. The coastline scenery is still full of colour at that time of the year.
