About Us

Update May 2021 - In the Romance category and in the Small hotels category for TripAdvisor The Marstan in Torquay celebrates being in the top 10 for both in the UK.

The Marstan Hotel is one of the highest rated five-star guest houses in Torquay. The Marstan is an elegant mid-Victorian Villa peacefully located along Meadfoot Sea Road in a conservation area within Torquay, South Devon. The harbour and town are approximately ten minutes’ walk with the blue flag awarded Meadfoot Beach and its stunning views being less than five minutes on foot.

An extensive refurbishment programme has helped us achieve a five-star guesthouse rating, AA gold award, Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame Award and a Michelin guide listing. The Marstan is the only five-star guest house in Torquay to benefit from a combination of an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and a licensed bar. In keeping with the period of the building and with many of the original features intact, the hotel is traditionally furnished with antiques complemented with modern amenities such as contemporary bathrooms, flat screen televisions and Wi-Fi.

The Marstan provides nine luxuriously appointed ensuite rooms including compact and classic doubles, family (with a double and two bunks beds), king and queen-sized rooms as well as our four poster and premium rooms. All bookings include our acclaimed breakfast, cooked to order and made with locally sourced ingredients.

The residents bar retains the ambience of a period drawing room with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages served including wines and spirits as well as a large selection of Devon and Cornwall craft gins and Torbay ales and cider.

Outside, carefully tended gardens with a selection of loungers, tables and chairs are available for guests to relax around our heated pool (open seasonally only) and hot tub (open all year). Guests can enjoy themselves in the sun or in the shade of one of our palm or banana trees. Parking is available on the property and additional parking is free of charge on the road outside.

The owners and staff endeavour to provide an attentive and personal service without being intrusive, with the aim of creating a luxury boutique hotel ambience.

Whilst Torquay can trace its roots back to the 12th century, the town came to prominence in the mid-19th century when the railway connections to London were built. Torquay rapidly became a fashionable seaside resort with the wealthy gentlemen of the period building holiday homes in the area. The Marstan is believed to be one such villa built around this time. Originally, a private home the building became a boarding house in 1912 known as The Pembroke. The hotel at that time had 20 bedrooms and three bathrooms occupying the same living space as is currently utilised, rooms were a shilling a week. In the 1980's, as tourist expectations rose the then owners decided to halve the number of bedrooms to provide bigger rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Largely untouched since then until 2005, the owners embarked upon a massive refurbishment programme repairing the fabric of the building, installing modern ensuites, redecorating and furnishing throughout. Further upgrades and improvements to the property continue on an ongoing basis.
