Historic inspiration, modern expression

In October 2023 young people from three schools joined the team from Sound Communities to take their favourite parts of the Torre Abbey collection outside, reimagining classic pieces in vibrant street art. This was an opportunity for young people from our local community who hadn’t visited the Abbey before to explore and interpret the Abbey’s collections on their own terms and contribute to the wider community engagement strategy for the Abbey’s 2024 restoration works.

This Summer, their art work will go on display for the second time, this time not spray painted on the building works hoardings, but inside the gallery space as a community curated exhibition.

Join us as we step outside the traditional confines of the gallery to explore the possibilities of youth led artistic expression and community focused programming.

Sound Futures

Sound Futures is an employability project funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The project uses creative digital media, music and radio-based opportunities as a tool to engage and inspire young people into raising their aspirations and supporting them to believe in themselves so that they can improve their chances in life and face their futures with more resilience and enable them to get work ready.

This programme was funded by Museum Estate Development Fund using public funds by Arts Council England, the Cultural Assets Fund (CAF); a government funding stream, administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), to protect treasured heritage assets in England from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic alongside match funding from Torbay Council and the Friends of Torre Abbey (FOTA).
