Cream or jam first – the great debate

The question of cream or jam first has been known to provoke conflict between Devonians and our neighbours in Cornwall. More recently, we’ve become aware of some people who suggest butter, then jam, and then cream, which is just plainly wrong. Of course the Devon way – cream first, then jam – is the right way to enjoy your scone. Although we’re a friendly bunch here in the English Riviera, so we won’t complain if you accidently do it the other way.

Country cottages and cream teas

For some, the only way to really enjoy a Devon cream tea is in the shadow of a thatched cottage with flowers all around. Head to the pretty village of Cockington and you won’t be disappointed. The Weaver’s Cottage Tea Shoppe is a small traditional family run business serving light lunches and homemade cream teas in an 18th Century cottage or in the tranquil beautiful walled courtyard garden.

Also in Cockington, the Seven Dials Cafe are housed within the luxurious settings of a manor house dating back to Tudor times. A perfect destination for a civilised afternoon, Cockington Court is also home to art galleries, a craft centre and a country park you can lose yourself in.

Devon cream teas with a view

If your troops are in need of refreshment, march them into the Guardhouse Café Brixham. Located at the Napoleonic-era fort at Berry Head, this family friendly café uses fresh local produce where possible and has won many awards, including best café/tearoom at the Devon Tourism Awards. That’s no mean feat given the competition we have in this county! Try their delicious cream tea and enjoy the spectacular views of the sea – you might even spot a dolphin.
