What a great day on the calendar… a whole day dedicated to that circular taste sensation, the pizza! We’ve proudly adopted the pizza as one of the UK's favourite dishes and there are any number of different toppings on offer these days. Do you stick to the classic Hawaiian or do you go for something a bit more adventurous like a mac & cheese pizza?

Well, we’ll leave that up to you. Here’s some pizza-inspiration from around The English Riviera. Get out there and share a few slices with friends and family on National Pizza Day.

Rock Garden, Torquay

Pizza oven at Rock Garden in Torquay Devon

Rock Garden is the home of pizza in Torquay - they have the only wood-burning stone pizza oven and they prepare all their own dough in-house. They have lots of pizza options available including vegan and gluten-free options.

ER Tip - The “Return of the Mac” is hard to avoid! A handmade pizza topped with their house mac ‘n’ cheese, ham, mozzarella and parmesan.

The Weary Ploughman, Brixham

Pizza at The Weary Ploughman in Brixham

Some might remember that the Weary Ploughman itself got its name via a competition held amongst locals to rename it in the mid-1970’s! Crazy right!? Well, maybe not as crazy as their pizza menu… they have been making artisan stone baked pizzas for quite a few years and have a reputation for interesting and quirky ingredients and unusual names.

ER Tip - Enter the pizza competition! Full details below… good luck!

As a homage to both the above and as they feel it might be time to let someone else loose with the terrible puns and obscure references, they are holding a competition to invent a locals pizza with an appropriate or maybe inappropriate name!

That’s right, you can invent your own pizza at The Weary Ploughman this National Pizza Day! The winner is the one that combines the twin tasks of being deliciously tasty and the name amusing the owners the most. The Winner gets not only the unimaginable honour of having won but one of their own pizza’s every month for a year.

Entries aren’t limited to savoury – let your imagination run wild – everybody always ignores suggestions of Haggis, Swede & Whisky – the “Burns’ the Stomach”. They may well give out more than one prize if the standard of entries is high enough. Simply send your ideas to localpizza@wearyploughman.co.uk. Entries close on Feb 28th 2019.

Rock Garden Torquay
Rock Garden Torquay, Devon

The Award Winning Rock Garden only opened a couple of years ago but has quickly become the place to be. This is due in part to our delicious food of either freshly made pizzas cooked in our wood burning stone oven(The only one in the area)or our legendary burgers and juicy steaks. We have much more then that though ranging from salads to sandwiches and soups to stews as well as a separate Vegan, Vegetarian & Gluten free menu. As expected all our food is freshly made and prepared on the premises. The other reason behind Rock Gardens success is the largest outdoor space in Torquay town. The garden has to be seen to be believed, during the summer you can soak up the sun while enjoying our food, jugs of Pimms or one of our amazing cocktails.

The Curious Kitchen
The Curious Kitchen, Brixham, Devon

When we first decided to open a café we always knew we wanted to serve fresh, healthy, modern food with options for everyone. We wanted a family or group of friends who had meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans & coeliacs to be able to come to our café and all eat together happily! We wanted to make as much of our food on the premises as possible, our own peanut butter, tomato ketchup, granola and cook our meals from scratch. Our Chef Ashley has had years of experience in catering, he started his career in Dartmouth whilst he was still at school then worked his way up the catering ladder working in Dart Royal Navy College, Café Ode, Pier Point & The Elizabethan Inn.
