Blue Waters Lodge

Blue Waters Lodge in Paignton, Devon

Colin and Jackie took over the Blue Waters Lodge in 2013. They are keen cyclists and walkers and enjoy taking their dog to the nearby beaches.

This delightful B&B has 6 bedrooms, one of which is a family suite, and the business has achieved a Visit England 4 Star Silver Award, as well as being ranked number 3 on TripAdvisor. They have most recently been awarded Gold at the Herald Express Tourism Awards 2018. Colin and Jackie offer a warm welcome to first time and returning guests and for those arriving on the English Riviera by train they offer a free collection and drop off service to the station.

It’s ideally located within a few minutes walk of Paignton beach and harbour, the town centre for shopping and the train and bus station to get around and explore the local area. Their ‘must see’ recommendation is to take the steam train from Paignton train station and stop off at Greenway Halt to visit Agatha Christie’s holiday home Greenway, idyllically set on the banks of the River Dart.     

Amber House

Amber House in Paignton, Devon

Debbie and John have been running the Amber House since 2014.  What they like most about living on the English Riviera is that there are lots of things to do for all ages and abilities. John is very keen on First and Second World War history and he enjoys talking to guests with similar interests.

The B&B has 10 bedrooms, each individually designed using contemporary pastel shades to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere and the rooms have charming coastal names such as Rockpool, Harbour and Cove. There’s also a nod to the resort’s most famous resident and Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie with two rooms aptly named Agatha and Poirot.  Amber House has received the AA 4 Star rating and has wonderful views over Goodrington and towards Brixham and Berry Head.

Debbie and John’s favourite local attraction that they recommend to visitors is to explore South Devon on a fine day taking the Round Robin trip onboard a steam train, river boat and bus with Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company.

Sonachan House

Sonachan House in Paignton, Devon

Sonachan House has been in the very safe hands of Tony and Julie for 16 years.  They enjoy being close to the coast and countryside and having lots of places to visit. In their spare time they enjoy sampling the different styles of cream teas served in the local tearooms and cafes so ask them for their recommendations when you stay with them.

This delightful B&B has 9 rooms and has recently been inspected by Visit England and has been awarded a 4 Star rating and the Breakfast Award. They have also received TripAdvisors’ Recognition of Excellence Award, scoring a fantastic 10 out of 10.

Situated in a peaceful location, yet within easy walking distance of Paignton and Goodrington beaches and the town centre, guests can relax on the garden deck or in the charming secluded fairy garden with its lovely water feature.

Free parking is available to residents and the owners recommend leaving the car behind and walking some of the South West Coast Path, which is only 10 minutes from Sonachan House.

The Commodore

The Commodore is owned by Stuart, Katrina and Sue.  They’re very sociable, having run the business for 11 years and they like to make their guests feel very welcome. They enjoy telling English Riviera visitors about the area’s fantastic scenery and how much there is to experience. They offer a dog friendly venue and have two dogs of their own, Peggy-Sue, a 5 year old sprocker and a 9 year old springer spaniel called Amber.

Housed within a charming period property, the B&B has 8 en-suite rooms and 2 bedroom apartments some with gorgeous, unobstructed sea views. The business has achieved TripAdvisor’s prestigious 5 star rating. The Commodore has a fantastic seafront location so if you’re looking for a hotel in Paignton with a seaview this would be an excellent choice. It’s also a few minutes walk to the town centre and all local amenities.

The owners’ ‘must see’ local attraction is a day out at Paignton Zoo, one of Britain’s top zoos. They suggest leaving the car in the free off road parking provided and using the local buses, boats and trains that provide reliable services and great access to so many places on the English Riviera.

Carrington Guest House

The Carrington B&B in Paignton, Devon

Brian and Angeline have run the Carrington Guest House for 9 years. They enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that living on the English Riviera offers and are keen walkers.

The Carrington is ideally located near to the beach and Paignton town centre with easy access to good transport links. There are 7 guest rooms spread over two floors, catering for single occupancy through to families, with reduced rates available for children sharing with their parents.

This popular B&B has achieved Visit England 3 Star rating and Silver Award. Brian and Angeline proudly support South West food suppliers and use locally sourced produce whenever possible to give visitors a real taste of the West Country. Fairtrade products are available and vegetarian diets are catered for.

The owners recommend using the English Riviera Attractions Passport to gain discounts on entry prices at many of the area’s award winning tourist attractions and using public transport to get around the bay.

Devon House Guest House

Richard and Clare have been running Devon House for 4 years. They enjoy the lovely mild climate and seeing the famous English Riviera palm trees.

This lovely Victorian property has been extensively renovated whilst retaining many original features. It offers 8 bedrooms including 2 family rooms and visitors who would like to stay for 2 nights or more are encouraged to call for a more personal service.

The business has received many industry accolades including in 2018 AA 4 Star Gold Award, Luxury Travel Awards and TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence.

Richard and Clare’s top tip for visitors is to enjoy the fine restaurants providing a variety of international flavours in Paignton including Gurkha’s Diner serving some of the finest Nepalese & Indian cuisine, and Thai Garden Restaurant with its oriental culinary dishes, traditional Thai music, surroundings and attentive staff.

St Edmunds Guest House

Gill and Tony run the St Edmunds Guest House, a seven bedroom accommodation in a central location with easy access to Paignton seafront. The owners provide a warm welcome to all guests and their motto is ‘Book as strangers, arrive as guests, leave as friends’.

This very pleasant B&B is a great choice for sea anglers who want to be close to Paignton Harbour, South West Coast Path walkers, and steam railway enthusiasts and Torbay Airshow visitors.

Three of the seven guest rooms are on the ground floor and there are good facilities for disabled visitors. There is ample parking with a space allocated for each room and for cyclists there is secure bike storage.

Gill and Tony recommend jumping onboard a steam train at Paignton station with Dartmouth Steam Railway and taking in the breathtaking views of Broadsands and Goodrington beaches and the Dart estuary. Arriving at Kingswear, the final stop on the journey enjoy a short ferry  crossing to the vibrant harbour town of Dartmouth.

The Briars Guest House

Amanda and Malcolm run The Briars Guest House in Paignton which has retained Visit England’s 4 star rating for 10 years running, the prestigious Silver award for 5 years and received TripAdvisors’ Certificate of Excellence in 2015.

There are 12 guest rooms, all furnished to a very high standard with complimentary toiletries, DVD player and Freeview TV for visitors to enjoy. Seven of the rooms have excellent sea views across the English Riviera.  There is a comfortable lounge bar and patio for guests to use and The Briars caters for business visitors, long or short stay breaks and solo travellers.

A recommendation for a great night out is to take in a show at the Palace Theatre, the English Riviera’s oldest working theatre. Situated in the heart of Paignton town, the theatre has an all year round programme of entertaining live productions catering for all ages and interests. Tickets can be purchased from the theatre box office, English Riviera Visitor Information Centre on Vaughan Parade, Torquay or other approved ticket sellers in Paignton and Brixham.

Wentworth Guest House

Perri and Allan at the Wentworth Guest House warmly welcome visitors and have created a ‘home from home by the sea’ setting. If you’re looking for that perfect spot for a beach holiday this could be for you.

The Wentworth is situated in a quiet parkside location within the popular area of Goodrington in Paignton. There are 10 guest rooms including one family room, and features include flat screen TV and Freeview channels and wireless internet access.  There are fantastic sea views, just a 150m walk to the award winning Goodrington beach and pretty terraced Rock Walk Gardens and the B&B is within close proximity of Paignton town centre.

Families can enjoy splashing about at the wettest and wildest outdoor attraction in the bay, Splashdown Quaywest with its great water slides and devil drop. The boating lake and crazy golf offer more family fun and the parkland area is perfect for picnics, some ball games or to simply stretch out and relax in the sun.

Harbour Lodge Bed & Breakfast

Situated in the delightful Roundham Head district of Paignton you’ll find the Harbour Lodge B&B, run by new owners, Jacqueline and Tony. The B&B is within a short walking distance of the quaint harbour, beachside cafes and top restaurants serving quality, freshly prepared evening meals.  It’s also a great base for exploring the English Riviera and South Devon.

There are 5 individually designed comfortable guest rooms equipped with modern facilities, some with impressive sea or garden views.

A top tip for visitors is to try your hand at the 18 hole adventure golf course on Paignton seafront.  Pirates Bay Adventure Golf provides great entertainment for families, kids and adults alike with dodge cannonballs and thieving pirates to tackle.
