It may sound cliché, but the English Riviera has everything that you need for a family holiday in Devon and caters for everyone from 0 to 100. The area really does offer multi-generational resorts, so whether you are just visiting for a holiday with your children, or bringing along the grandparents too, there will be plenty to keep everyone happy.

Let’s start with the beautiful sandy beaches at Torquay and Paignton that are enjoyed by many, and offer good quality bathing waters too.  Did you know that Torquay has the best sand for sandcastle building?  A study has been carried out by scientists who travelled the UK beaches with their buckets and spades, and the resort came up trumps!  Without getting too “Sciencey”, the quality of your sandcastle is all down to the mixture of sand and water. Torquay came out on top due to its extremely fine-grained sand, which also resulted in the beach having the sand with the greatest cohesive powers. So, pack your bucket and spade and enjoy a good old family sandcastle competition… the winner buys the ice cream!

You will also find the fishing village of Brixham, a great alternative to a day at the beach, where generations of families have fished for centuries, helping to secure the English Riviera’s Seafood Coast.  In 2000, the former MAFF agency, now, DEFRA, survey revealed Brixham to be the premier fishing port of England and Wales, with annual landings totalling £18.4 million from 10366 species of fish. Watch the colourful trawlers come in with their catch, do some crabbing and enjoy a fish and chip supper.
