Shopping
From unique crafts to the latest fashions, if you like to shop, you’ll love the English Riviera. As well as all your favourite high street regulars, you’ll find plenty of quirky independent stores selling things you just won’t find anywhere else. In the summer months, bustling craft and farmer’s markets pop up and sell local produce direct from the makers. And in the run up to Christmas, towns like Torquay and Brixham light up with festive cheer.
Independent, individual shops
If you’re looking for something different, look no further than the independent retailers in Babbacombe and Brixham. Amble around the streets to find everything from handmade ceramics to wool and fabrics. You’ll also find delis in these towns stocking a choice of great local produce as well as specialist foods from around the world.
Markets where you can pick up almost anything
Visit one of the thriving markets to find daily essentials and the unusual. On Thursdays, you can wander around over 90 regular stalls selling everything from vintage jewellery to collectable at the Torquay Grand Flea Market. While on Saturdays from Easter to October, the Brixham Art, Craft and Farmer’s Market bustles with great food and local crafts. Pick up a momento to take back home or grab a delicious home-cooked pasty for lunch.
Stylish shopping in Torquay
Since Victorian times, Torquay has had a reputation for being fashionable. The promenade along the seafront is the perfect place to show off your latest purchases. And with a choice of designer boutiques and high street favourites in the town, there are plenty of places to look for something special to wear. Hoopers department store on The Strand stocks an eclectic choice of your favourite brands and welcomes customers with its smart, personalised service. On the outskirts of the town you’ll also find large retail stores stocking everything from homewear to electronics.
Local, home-grown food
Farmer’s markets are a great spot to pick up local, home-grown produce. Or try the farm shops at Occombe, (NOTE: The farm shop is currently closed and being extended. Reopening is planned for summer 2021) outside Paignton, and Churston on the road out of Brixham. Here you’ll find local delicacies on sale, including our very own locally-made award winning ale from Bays Brewery.
Shopping in Paignton
Head to Paignton for a good choice of high-street shops selling everything from fashion to footwear. And if you need to stock up on supplies for the beach this is the place. No seaside trip would be complete without an inflatable flamingo and, of course, a bucket and spade. Walk along the brightly illuminated Torbay Road that stretches from the station to the seafront and you’ll find everything you could possibly need for fun in the sand and waves.
