For arts and culture, Torquay is the birthplace of the ‘Queen of Crime’ Agatha Christie. Take a walk on the ‘Agatha Christie Mile’ and discover the places along the way that inspired the famous crime writer’s stories. Each year the resort hosts the Agatha Christie International Festival, with many venues taking part with themed events. Writers on the Riviera is a self-guided literary trail around the English Riviera where you can uncover the places and stories of some of the greatest writers of our time who have visited and stayed in the area.
The English Riviera’s amazing landscape has designated UNESCO Global Geopark status and there is 22 miles of stunning coastline with unrivalled views. Follow the South West Coast Path, an exciting walking adventure which meanders along some of the English Riviera’s most spectacular vantage points with wonderful woodlands, secluded coves and peaceful countryside settings. It’s a popular past time with ramblers, nature lovers and dog walkers.
If you enjoy outdoor adventure there’s a wealth of water sport activities from stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), sea kayaking, sailing and coasteering. You can also take an open top sightseeing bus tour, enjoy a ride on the land train in Paignton or Torquay, or travel on the nostalgic steam train from Paignton station to Kingswear with the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
The English Riviera is known as England’s Seafood Coast for the finest quality seafood caught locally in Brixham harbour. There are over 200 cafes, tearooms and restaurants serving a range of quality, local produce including the freshest seafood and famous Devon Cream Teas. There are also 100 pubs, bars and clubs for cocktails, traditional beers and ciders and speciality gins and wines.
This award-winning, year-round resort has 20 top beaches with 10 award winning ones from secluded coves to long and unspoilt sandy stretches. Whether you’re visiting for a summer holiday with the family or a short break the English Riviera is a great place to be, any time of year.
