Things to Do
Fishing Trips
Fishing has an important place in the English Riviera, and is a large part of the region’s cultural heritage. Many of the local people have generations of fishermen in their families, and it continues to be an important part of life in the area to this day.
Go Fish!
You can learn all about the South West’s fishing history in Brixham Heritage Museum or why not try fishing for yourself? The Geopark ‘Catch and Cook' discovery package is a great way to discover traditional mackerel fishing methods, and catch your own supper too with some help on hand in the shape of the sous-chef from Torquay’s Michelin-starred Elephant Restaurant who will give you a seafood prep demonstration. For the more adventurous there’s a chance to go shark fishing without having to travel to the Caribbean, although we can’t promise you’ll hook a Great White.
If you haven’t got your own kit, there are plenty of shops in the area ready to provide you with all the necessary equipment. There is a long list of beaches such as Babbacombe Beach and various headlands all offering unrestricted fishing. There is a variety of different species lurking below the waters, including mackerel, pollock, bass, mullet and even conger eel. For freshwater anglers, South Devon also has some of the best trout and salmon fishing in the region
Take a Trip
Sea angling excursions regularly leave Torquay, Brixham and Paignton, and many of the boatmen are local fishermen themselves, so you’re sure to make a catch.
So if you’re looking for something fun and relaxing to do, spend a peaceful day fishing on the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay.
