Things to Do
Watersports
With two piers, three harbours, 22 beaches and two marinas, life in the English Riviera revolves around the sea. The calm waters and gentle currents of South Devon’s beautiful bay make it one of the best water sport locations in the UK, particularly for beginners.
Sailing is particularly popular, as the English Riviera has one of the best bays in the UK for learners and salty sea dogs alike. The region plays host to 50 regional, national or international sailing events during the summer months, with competitions always promising to deliver a healthy dose of excitement. August is a busy month in the boating calendar, with the Fastnet race and the week-long Dartmouth Regatta drawing in sailing boats from all over the world.
Let a scuba diving instructor take you out to the deep blue sea so you can swim with the fish, or hire a jet ski and take it for a spin around the bay. You can also give some extreme sports a go including kite-surfing, wind-surfing and water-skiing. If you’re a beginner surfer, the calm waters of the English Riviera are perfect for finding your feet on a board.
If you prefer a gentler pace of life, hire a pedalo and go for a gentle bob in the ocean, or you could even hop on an organised boat trip and try your luck at fishing. Even if your love of water sports is limited to a quick paddle in the waves, you can swim safely in the English Riviera.
