If you’re looking for beach holidays in the UK, then South Devon is well worth a closer look.
The English Riviera area, consisting of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, has over 22 miles of sandy beaches and beautiful coastline on the south coast of Devon. What it has that other similar destinations don’t is sub-tropical weather, due to a unique micro-climate and the sheltered position of Tor Bay.
Torquay and Paignton are traditional English seaside resorts and pull in large number of visitors every year. All of the beaches are clean and safe, and many feature extensive beachside amenities for all ages. Goodrington Sands near Paignton for instance, offers the use of beach huts, deck chair and sun lounger hire as well as places to hire pedalos.
To the north of Torquay, the village of Babbacombe offers some of the best beach holidays to be found in South Devon. Quieter than its more glitzy neighbour Babbacombe’s two beaches, Babbacombe and Oddicombe beach, lie beneath towering red sandstone cliffs covered in lush vegetation. Beach users can descend to the sands either by a steep cliff path, or they can make use of the famous Babbacombe Cliff Railway - one of very few remaining funicular railways in the UK.
Attractions and Things to Do
While South Devon offers some superb sun, sea and sand for beach holidays, it also has a lot more to do besides. Paignton Pier offers a range of family activities such as crazy golf and an amusement arcade, remaining true to the style of the traditional English seaside town. Pleasure cruises can be boarded at the harbour, while a little further out visitors can take a memorable ride aboard the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.
Back in Babbacombe meanwhile, the model village there provides a miniature spectacle that both young and old can enjoy.
