New Year Breaks
The English Riviera on the south coast of Devon is a well known as a popular seaside resort in the summer, but it also has a lot to offer visitors in search of festive and New Year breaks.
Because of their unique micro-climate in a sheltered bay, the Riviera towns of Torquay, Brixham and Paignton (collectively known as Torbay) remain pleasantly mild even in the depths of winter. So when the rest of the UK is freezing, residents and visitors to South Devon are instead just chilling.
Unlike most resort towns, which tend to go into hibernation during the winter months until the spring and summer brings new influxes of tourists, Torbay stays busy all year round, making it a perfect UK destination for New Year breaks away from home.
Celebrating New Year in South Devon
In Torquay and Paignton, most clubs put on special fancy dress themed events for New Year, drawing in huge crowds of locals and visitors on their New Year breaks.
If you fancy something a little more relaxed meanwhile, many pubs in the area stay open late on New Year’s Eve, and put on buffet spreads and events such as karaoke.
If it’s romantic New Year breaks you’re looking for, south Devon will not disappoint. Winter strolls along the promenade offer lovers a perfect opportunity to relax in each other’s company and forget the rest of the world. The town of Brixham is a particularly romantic destination for New Year breaks, with its fishing harbour and marina overlooked by charming old fashioned cottages. In the evening, when the lights come on, it provides some unforgettable sights.
New Year Dining and Accommodation in Devon
The English Riviera also has a huge range of restaurants to choose from, ranging from the intimate to the grandiose, and many offer special seasonal deals. Hotels in the area meanwhile often have packages tailored specifically for New Year breaks, and include accommodation, dining and entertainment.
