Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Take a Walk on the Wild Side through South Devon and the English Riviera

The South Devon region is blessed with some of the most spectacular coast and countryside in Europe and the first-ever "Walk on the Wild Side" walking festival offers the perfect way to experience it in like-minded company.

Following on from the success of the English Riviera Walking Festival, the Torbay Development Agency have teamed up with Teignbridge District Council to offer a programme of 13 guided walks, taking place between 26th and 30th May 2008. Guided walks featured in the programme include a Geopark-themed trail at Bishop's Walk, a moorland ramble at Haytor, two "Walks with Carter" in Paignton and an estuary stroll at Dittisham.

Not only have the walks been planned so that the participants can enjoy South Devon's stunning coast and countryside, walkers will also learn about the fascinating history and heritage of the region. For example, a walk across the beautiful Babbacombe coastline will reveal intriguing stories of renowned historic figures, while an evening stroll at Berry Head will showcase native flora and fauna, including the rare white rock rose.

Holly Hollis, Sustainable Tourism Officer for the English Riviera Tourist Board said: "Walking is a superb way of experiencing some of the region's breathtaking natural inheritance and we are delighted to be working with our neighbours, Teignbridge Council, to offer our visitors a wider area to explore. It's great to see so many local walking groups getting involved and as our festival falls in the same week as International Geopark Week, we'll be taking the opportunity to showcase our incredible geological heritage".

Cllr David Corney-Walker, Teignbridge Council Executive Spokespers11on for Economic Development and Tourism said: "This is the first year that Teignbridge is working with English Riviera to jointly host the Walk on the Wild Side Festival. This festival is a great opportunity to highlight the range of walks that our areas have and the stunning coastal and countryside views on offer. Quite often it is easy to forget the wide range on activities that are available on our doorsteps, and I'd encourage residents and visitors alike to come along and take part in this special event."

The walks, which are mainly circular, range from a short stroll along Paignton's seafront to a long and challenging hike over Dartmoor's wild and magical Tors. Some walks will be subject to a small charge, while on others, a small donation will be gratefully received.
