History and Heritage

The English Riviera withholds an enviable reputation as one of the country's leading holiday destinations but the treasures of the Bay are not confined to its beaches, gardens, palm trees and mild climate.

From Romans and Vikings to the Spanish Armada, Napoleon and a famous sewing machine connection, the history and heritage of Torbay will surprise and delight all visitors.

The three towns are all steeped in a rich seafaring heritage - fishing, trading and wars have all made their mark - the dramatic headland of Berry head shows the remains of two Napoleonic forts and both Torquay and Brixham have Slipways marking the areas significant role in the D-Day landings.

Agatha Christie, Torquay's most famous daughter, worked and socialised in the fashionable resort during the early 1900's. Many of the locations she frequented during her time in the Bay were later to inspire her writing and appear in the pages of her best selling crime novels. The Agatha Christie Mile will take your group on a tour of the many places that were inspirational in the life and works of the great writer.

A suggested itinerary:
A morning visit to Torquay Museum will allow the chance to journey into the town's fascinating past. Discover more about Torquay through the ages, famous inhabitants, local wildlife - and don't miss the unique Agatha Christie Exhibition; the only one of its kind in the world.

Continuing in Torquay, onto Kents Cavern, where groups can take one of the highly recommended guided tours. Walk through a labyrinth of chambers and passageways and view first hand an abundance of unusual formations that have been created by nature over the last 2 million years. Stop for some lunch before heading to Paignton for a trip on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.

Experience the great days of steam travel with a journey from Paignton to Kingswear along Torbay's spectacular coast and the beautiful River Dart. You can combine your steam train ride with a trip on the ferry over the river to Dartmouth and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring this charming old river town, steeped in maritime history. Dartmouth is also home to the Britannia Naval College, where group guided tours are available.
