Newton Abbot
Things to Do
Newton Abbot
Famous for its racecourse, Newton Abbot is only about 20 minutes drive from the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay.
Known for its historic markets (the first was held nearly 1000 years ago), Newton Abbot is still a popular place for visitors and traders alike. The farmers and produce markets are ideal places to shop and there are regular car boot sales where you can pick up a bargain, and arts and crafts markets filled with beautiful, locally made objects, jewellery and pictures.
If you happen to be visiting in September, check out the town’s ‘Cheese and Onion Fayre’, featuring food stalls as well as live music, crafts and other events.
Newton Abbot Racecourse
The racecourse is the UK’s leading summer jumping course. So whether you’re a committed rail jockey or it’s your first foray into the sport of kings and you want to experience the local atmosphere, make sure you pay a visit. The racecourse also doubles up as a conference centre for business events and meetings, and in the summer it plays host to ‘Lemonfest’ – a great weekend music festival featuring bands from the local area and around the country.
Lemonfest is typical of the smaller, more personal South Devon festivals. In May the whole town comes alive for the Newton Abbot festival, a celebration of live music, dance, art and street theatre.
Newton Abbot has lots to be discovered if you fancy a day away from the beaches of the English Riviera.
