If you want to spend your days with a bucket and spade, digging holes and making sandcastles, the beautiful long, sandy beach at Dawlish is the perfect choice. Throw in a net and the chance to scramble over rock pools searching for starfish, and you’ve got the traditional British family seaside holiday sewn up.
Nearby Dawlish Warren offers even more fun and excitement for the whole family, from go-karting and mini-golf to a range of rides for the kids. If 18-holes are more your thing, check out the Warren golf-course, which combines beautiful, natural views of the estuary and Nature Reserve with some of the finest greens in the South West.
A haven for wildlife
And it’s not just families who’ll enjoy all that Dawlish has to offer. Birdwatchers flock to this area to visit the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, which is rated as the second most important reserve in Devon and plays host to a wide range of native and migrant species, including Shoveler, Plover and Snipe. The Warren is also home to numerous reptiles, small mammals and insects, and if you’re lucky you might catch sight of a dolphin or two.
Dawlish Air Show
The famous black swans of Dawlish town may be an easier spot for most of us and in the summer they are joined by airborne things of a different nature when the world famous Red Arrows pay a visit, along with a fleet of other mighty planes at the popular Dawlish Air Show.
Getting here, or exploring the area once you’re here, couldn’t be easier as there is a train station right in the centre of the town. The track runs along the coast, under the distinct red sandstone cliffs, affording one of the best scenic railway routes in the UK – if you’re a train fan this is another ‘must’ to tick off your list of things to see and do.
