”It feels so good in the bay!” sing Metronomy in their eponymous hit single The Bay. The electro-pop band wrote the track – inspired by Torquay - as part of their Mercury Prize-nominated album of 2011 The English Riviera, a nod to band founder Joseph Mount’s childhood spent in the South Devon seaside resort.

The much-lauded album combines the sounds of seagulls and local radio station Riviera Fm with the cool vibes of California, while the album artwork uses the famous Torbay Palm image from the 1980s that made the English Riviera a household name. Even their drum kit features the palm!

In May 2011 Metronomy filmed the video for The Bay right here in Torquay, with glamorous models pictured against stunning coastal backdrops. The Riviera has never looked so good! And Venue nightclub in Torquay hosted the band’s first ever Devon concert that September.

With Muse just down the road in Teignmouth and Metronomy in Torquay, South Devon is fast becoming an inspiration for top bands.
