Enjoy an English Riviera Eco Friendly Experience

It’s not just the fields and hedgerows in this area that are green.  Thanks to the wealth of delicious, locally produced food and drink and the strong desire of local people and businesses to keep this beautiful area as perfect as possible for future generations, you can enjoy days out and fabulous meals across the English Riviera and South Devon without ballooning your carbon footprint.

Car Free Days

There are many ways to travel that will not only improve your green credentials but also be a whole lot more fun.  Be transported back to the golden age of steam with trains running from Totnes to Buckfastleigh and from Paignton to Kingswear or hit the decks on the restored paddle steamer, offering various trips from Dartmouth. Enjoy a sailor’s eye view on boat trips along the coast linking nearby towns, including Totnes and Dartmouth; you might even spot a seal.  Even the standard bus routes in the English Riviera offer something a little bit different with the leather seated, Wi-Fi enabled, Stagecoach Gold service, which boasts lower emissions, and an open top bus (weather permitting) both connecting Torquay and Paignton with surrounding towns.  Or if you prefer to two wheels, bike hire is widely available and you can take advantage of the network of cycle routes.

South West Coast Path

Exploring the region by foot offers a great opportunity to view some breathtaking coastal vistas. The South West Coast Path is reputedly one of “Britain’s best-loved walks”, and here on the English Riviera you can explore the hidden coves and dramatic headlands of our 22 miles of stunning coastline in the greenest and yet most rewarding way possible. Plus a day out exploring won’t cost any more than the price of a few sandwiches to keep you going!

Green Attractions

There are lots of places to visit that care as much about conservation issues and sustainability as you do. Pennywell Farm and Canoe Adventures offer environmentally friendly days out for the whole family.  Both hold Gold Green Tourism Awards, recognising their dedicated approach to providing fun and entertainment whilst minimising the impact on their surroundings.

Award-winning Accommodation

You can also opt to stay somewhere that places green issues high on their agenda. The Toorak Hotel in Torquay scooped Gold in the Green Business Tourism Awards, part of the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK.  Harbour Lodge guest house in Paignton and Compton Pool Farm self-catering cottages are Gold Award winners in the Green Tourism Awards, whilst Beverly Holidays holds a Silver Award, testament to their efforts to use energy responsibly, minimise waste, support local producers and actively engage in conserving the natural environment. And Whitehill Country Park, Paignton, holds a David Bellamy Conservation Gold Award for its work towards protecting and enhancing Britain's natural environment.

A Local Flavour – South Devon Food & Drink

With the rolling hills and blue seas providing rich pickings when it comes to food it’s little surprise that high quality, locally sourced ingredients are the main staple on many menus and farm shops in the area.  Highlights include heading to Occombe Farm, which offers a family friendly nature trail to help work up an appetite or Sharpham to find out more about producing fine wines and delicious cheeses on the banks of the Dart, before the obligatory taste test. For something a little bit different, you can book on to a Brixham Fish Market tour.  Michelin-starred The Elephant in Torquay actively campaigns for sustainable fishing and The Orange Tree in Torquay is a member of Taste of the West, dedicated to using local produce wherever possible.
