STONE AGE FESTIVAL 2019

FEBRUARY HOLIDAY FUN! A programme of events hosted at Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves in the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark. Get involved in a range activities and workshops celebrating the remarkable story of Ice Age animal & Stone Age human occupation of these caves.

FAMILY FUN for February holidays - Sat 16 to Sun 24 Feb 2019

Celebrate life thousands of years ago by becoming one of the tribe and take part in your own Stone Age adventure! Could you make your own Stone Age shelter to survive? Could you become a hunter by searching for ancient beasts? Can you discover art in caves and recreate your own? There's all of this and more to look forward to in the Stone Age festival, all week at Kents Cavern. There's loads of activities to take part in, included in the cave admission price. 

ACTIVITIES INCLUDED IN THE CAVE ADMISSION:

ALL DAY - FREESAT 16 - SUN 24 FEB UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED

ICE AGE ANIMAL HUNT

Reveal a secret word by finding all of the hidden Ice Age animals hidden around the woods. (ideal for ages 4+)

FLAG PAINTING

Paint the markings of your tribe on your very own Stone Age flag. (ideal for ages 4-11)

ANIMAL TRAIL

Take part in this cave trail to discover the different animals that lived in Devon during warmer and colder climates. (ideal for ages 4-11)

PALEOTABLE

Discover tools and artefacts used and made by Stone Age people at our handling table. (ideal for ages 6+)

SHELTER BUILDING

Help to build a communal woodland shelter using natural materials. (ideal for ages 6+)

SPEAR THROWING

Take part in this challenge to see if you have the stealth and accuracy of a young Neanderthal hunter (ideal for ages 3-7)

STONE AGE TRAIL 

Head into our woodland area and discover the skills that Stone Age people needed to learn to survive at Kents Cavern while they were here. (ideal for ages 6+)

GEMSTONE DIG

Excavate sandboxes to uncover hidden fossils, you might even find some precious gemstones while you’re digging. (ideal for ages 3-12)

CLAY FIGURINES

Cave art isn't just paintings in caves, it can be portable like carvings or jewellery.  Shape a clay figurine to take home (ideal for ages 7-11)

FLINT KNAPPING DEMO

Thu 21st Feb only. Join Karl Lee, one of the UK's leading primitive technologists, inside Kents Cavern as he demonstrates how Stone Age people made tools from flint  

JUNKMAN'S JUNKJAM

Fri 22nd Feb only. Join Donald Knaack, the "JunkMan" for his World famous JunkJam inside Kents Cavern after your tour. Learn how to take a more Stone Age approach to recycling with chants and rhythms!

EXTRA BOOKABLE SESSIONS AND WORKSHOPS...

STONE AGE CHEF - SAT 16 FEB: AM & PM 

Choose from two Stone Age Chef sessions 10-12 or 2-4pm 

Bring along a vegetable to add into the Stone Age soup, and learn why it was so important for Stone Age people to work in groups. We won’t stay strictly Stone Age for this session, otherwise we wouldn't be able to roast marshmallows!

Each child will leave every session with something that they have made and a badge to show their new Stone Age skill. The event is part of Stone Age School, a monthly Saturday Club programme. BOOK NOW

CAVES AND COSMOS - TUE 19 FEB: 6-8PM 

Join astronomy charity 'Dartmoor Skies' for an insightful, fun and interactive talk which will explore what previous inhabitants of Kents Cavern would and wouldn't have seen when they gazed skyward. Suitable for older children and adults you'll be guided through the solar system above. All children must be accompanied 

After the talk if the sky is clear there will be a guided tour of the night sky and a chance to see some wonders of the universe first hand through Dartmoor Skies' brilliant telescopes. If the weather is bad then a guided cave tour will take place. Warm clothing and sensible footwear recommended. Fee £10 BOOK NOW

STONE AGE SESSIONS - SUN 17 TO SUN 24 FEB: AM & PM

Two workshop daily sessions aimed at differnent ages..

Morning sesssion: Gatherers and Muscians 10 - 11.30am  for the younger Tribe (aged 4-8)  You will make your own pouch and look for items along the Woodland Trail. Then learn about Stone Age music and make your own rainmaker before heading into the caves to hear how it sounds! Fee £5

Afternoon session: Firemaking 2 - 3:30pm for the older Tribe (aged 7-12) Take part in an interactive firemaking session - learn how to make fire by friction and then head into the caves to check out fire the Stone Age way! Fee £5 BOOK NOW

FLINT KNAPPING WORKSHOP - WED 20 FEB: 5-7PM

An evening interactive flint knapping workshop with Karl Lee, one of the UK’s leading primitive technologists, inside Kents Cavern.  He leads a demonstration focused on how Stone Age people made tools from flint through a process called ‘knapping’. 

You'll be getting hands-on as Karl guides you through the steps to make your own flint tool, the Stone Age way. This workshop is suitable for ages 12+. All children must be accompanied by a full paying adult. No bare legs and no open shoes. Fee £10 BOOK NOW

ART IN THE CAVES - FRI 22 FEB: 6:30-9PM

Join Devon based professional artist Mike McDonald for an art masterclass and then find your spot in the caves to sketch Nature's underground beauty.  This two and a half hour experience includes one-to-one tuition and access into the caves.  Suitable for beginnners and experienced artists. Firestone Kitchen open for meals and drinks. Fee £16 BOOK NOW
