About Us

Start your festival season in style at the English Riviera’s very own family friendly festival by the sea. Grinagog is a hugely popular two day music and arts feast set within the idyllic 800 year old grounds of Torre Abbey Museum in Torquay.

The legend of the Grinagog runs deep in South Devon. So what is a Grinagog?  It’s an old Devonshire term describing someone who is perpetually smiling. These days it’s believed to be an ancient mythical sea creature creating a tidal wave of live music, DJs and inspiration and it’s set to return to our stunning shores. This delightful event has become a firm favourite in the English Riviera’s calendar of great things to do, celebrating all forms of culture, creativity, diversity and hi-jinks.

Grinagog is an urban festival which means that there’s no camping available on site, but there’s a wealth of self-catering, B&B’s and hotels available locally and good transport links. Take a look at our accommodation pages for some great ideas of where to stay on the English Riviera.

Throughout the weekend experience the distinctive indoor stage settings within a medieval crypt, a chapel and a tithe barn. There’s an eclectic mix of live performances from over 200 local and international artists and DJs offering acoustic sets with an African and Jamaican reggae flavour; hip hop; soul; electro-swing and jazz tones. Previous headline acts have included Grime MC artist Big Narstie, Macka B and DJ and actor Craig Charles.

Saturday is a dedicated Families Day with a host of enchanting storytelling and crafty make and take sessions, physical theatre and puppet workshops and a colourful carnival procession to keep the children entertained. Sunday has a quieter relaxed feel with a Sunday Papers Live session, poetry and comedy acts and a debating corner plus some gentle tones to enjoy throughout the day amongst the 10 indoor stages and outdoor tents.

There are plenty of local traders with food and drink stalls providing a tempting array of sweet and savoury offerings and beverages as well as the museum’s quaint tea room offering delicious homemade dishes and cakes.
