About Us

South West Walk - The South West Coast Path is perhaps the UK’s ultimate challenge for the long-distance hiker. At 630 miles, it is the UK’s longest National Trail. It runs from Minehead in Somerset along the north coast to Penzance in Cornwall, and all the way up the South Coast to Poole Harbour, Dorset. The height gained and lost is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 4 times!

The Coast Path is enjoyed by millions of residents and visitors to the South West every year. It stretches along the entire length of the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay. Here you will find 22 miles of coastal path through some stunning Geopark scenery. You can either take in all the aspects of gentle stretches, dramatic headlands, award winning beaches and harbour views or choose the elements you enjoy most. Relaxation, challenge, tranquillity or inspiration – the choice is yours!

Many guests have stayed at The Cimon using us as a base for parts of the walk from Berry Head through to Teignmouth. Our hearty breakfast has helped them on the wayJ.

National Trust/ English Heritage

Within a 30 minute a radius of The Cimon, guests can enjoy the wealth of historical houses and castles, moorlands and lush gardens that are maintained by the National Trust and English Heritage. Just some of the nearby attractions are:

Agatha Christie’s Greenway House –Set in the 1950, this was the holiday home of the famous author and her family. They relaxed by the river, played croquet and read her latest mysteries. The house is filled with archaeology, Tunbridgeware, silver, botanical china and books. The grounds are recognised as a ‘Garden of Excellence’ by the International Camellia Society with a restored peach house and romantic woodland leading to the Dart estuary.

Coleton Fishacre – Travel back to the 1920’s jazz age at the Art Deco country home of the D'Oyly Carte family. A light, joyful atmosphere fills the rooms, and music plays, echoing the family's Gilbert and Sullivan connections. The RHS accredited garden has glimpses out to sea, glades and tranquil ponds, and tender Mediterranean plants.

Totnes Castle – This classic Norman motte and bailey castle was founded soon after the Conquest to overawe the Saxon town. A later stone shell-keep crowns its steep mound, giving sweeping views across the town rooftops to the River Dart. You can climb to the top of the keep to enjoy stunning views over the town of Totnes and across to the River Dart. There is room to picnic in the peaceful grounds or you are an easy walk to the town with its quaint shops and eateries. Berry Pomeroy Castle is just a short drive away.

Berry Pomeroy Castle – within the 15th-century defences of the Pomeroy family castle, looms the dramatic ruined shell of its successor, the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours. They enlarged it over time intending it to become the most spectacular house in Devon, a match for Longleat and Audley End. Never completed, and abandoned by 1700, it is known for many ghost stories which are recounted in the audio tour.

Compton Castle – a rare survivor, this medieval fortress with high curtain walls, towers and a portcullis, is set in a landscape of rolling hills and orchards. It is a bewitching mixture of romance and history. Home to the Gilbert family for nearly 600 years, including Sir Humphrey Gilbert - half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh.

Plus there is Dartmoor. Ever changing though-out the seasons with wonderful walks, Tors, the ponies and places to stop for cream tea – jam on top of course when in Devon.
