Cockington
A real picture-postcard village, Cockington has hardly changed over hundreds of years. There’s evidence of Iron Age and Saxon settlements near the Drum Inn and the village is mentioned in the Domesday Book. You can even step back in time and explore this glorious village on horse-drawn carriage.
Cockington Court
The pride of the village is Cockington Court, originally owned by the Cary family from 1375 to 1654. Cockington Court is now home to a fabulous contemporary arts and crafts hub, showcasing creative arts from, among others, glassmakers, a canoe maker, a blacksmith and conceptual artists. With beautiful gardens and a fabulous tea room it’s a great place to spend the day with plenty to see and do for the whole family..
The Agatha Christie Literary Trail
Cockington Court also has a connection to the English Riviera’s most famous daughter, Agatha Christie. In her youth, she often visited the village and her novel ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ is dedicated to her friend Christopher Mallock. The Mallocks regularly staged amateur theatricals at Cockington Court and, despite her terrible shyness, Agatha Christie often took part.
Think afternoon tea, cricket on the green and the gentle pace of village life you would find in an Agatha Christie Miss Marple novel (without the murders, of course!) and you have the rural idyll that is Cockington.
If you want to truly experience traditional English country life, come to Cockington on the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful Bay.
