The Torbay area in south Devon, dubbed the English Riviera, is one of only six locations in the UK to have been granted Geopark status in recognition of its unique geological heritage and local efforts to preserve it. Brixham, along with Torquay and Paignton, is one of the three main towns on the English Riviera, and offers a peaceful base for exploring the Geopark and attractions in the area.

To the east of Brixham, the coastal headland of Berry Head is the spectacular location of a well-maintained nature reserve, and its cliffs are home to a variety of seabirds including razorbills, kittiwakes and guillemots. A visitor’s centre there enables close up observation of the birds without disturbing them, via a CCTV network. The headland also contains a variety of rare plants, and, hidden in the caves, endangered greater horseshoe bats. A fort from the Napoleonic era can also be found here, built on the remains of a far older Iron Age defensive fortification.

Back in the town, the central focus of Brixham is the busy harbour area, which remains an important fishing port.
