Brixham is one of the three towns which make up the area in Devon known as the English Riviera, along with Torquay and Paignton. Of the three, it perhaps offers the most authentic experience for anyone wanting to delve into the history of the area, whilst still offering easy access to the more fast-paced entertainments and attractions of the neighbouring towns.

Fishing has been at the heart of Brixham life for centuries, and today the busy harbour is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. The harbour and marina are popular areas for visitors to the town, and the sight of fishing trawlers returning to port with a flock of seagulls trailing behind is a common one.

Meanwhile, inquisitive children will be delighted to discover a full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind, in which he and a crew of 70 circumnavigated the globe in the 16th Century. Visitors can board the boat and try out a range of hand’s-on exhibits above and below deck.

Hotels in Brixham

Brixham is an ideal base for exploring the sights and attractions of the English Riviera and the surrounding Devon countryside. The town has a range of hotels suitable for all tastes and wallets.

Whether you prefer the intimacy and modern chic of boutique-style hotels or the feeling of wonder that comes from staying in a hotel steeped in history, Brixham has something for you.

On the coastal headland to the east of Brixham, the Berry Head Hotel offers peaceful views of the coast, and the chance to enjoy a Devon cream tea on the hotel’s terrace as the sun sets behind returning fishing trawlers.

The Smuggler’s Haunt Hotel meanwhile is found in the centre of town, in a building which is over 300 years old. Local legend has it that one of the original cottages that form the hotel was once a residence of famed smuggler ‘Resurrection Bob’ Elliot, who escaped the law by hiding in a coffin.
