Babbacombe, on the north-eastern fringe of Torquay, is home to many such guest houses, and is ideally situated for an unforgettable holiday on Devon’s south coast. As well as offering easy access to the other resorts of the Riviera, the comparatively small and quiet area of Babbacombe has a unique character of its own. Red sandstone cliffs are topped by lush green vegetation, while down below Oddicombe and Babbacombe beaches provide a place to relax in the sun or tear the kids away from their games consoles to build sandcastles.

The beaches are served by the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, so there’s no need to worry about being puffed out by the time you reach the beach. The funicular railway is one of the few of its kind remaining in Britain today.

Another popular family attraction is Babbacombe Model Village. Since opening almost 50 years ago the village has grown to encompass 400 model buildings including stately homes, shops and even a small-scale replica of Stonehenge. And with tiny buildings must of course come tiny people, over 10,000 of them in fact.
