The English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay, plays host to thousands of visitors, all of whom come for different reasons. With a variety of sporting events taking place throughout the year, it’s no surprise that many come to this spectacular setting to watch or take part in the sports they love.
From Hockey to Bowls
When it comes to sports events, Torquay and Paignton have well-facilitated venues that accommodate events on both land and sea. The regatta season is the high point of the maritime calendar, but there are plenty of events on land too. Every year Paignton hosts the Easter Hockey Festival where thousands of players descend to Goodrington to take part, and the popular English Riviera Dance Festival takes place at Paignton’s Palace Theatre. Torquay is the venue for the annual English Riviera Open Bowls Tournament., while June’s Torbay Half Marathon is a much more gruelling event that sees competitors race between Torquay and Paignton along the iconic seafront.
Football
Torquay United Football Club, a Football League 2 team, play their home matches at Plainmoor and the Devon Sharks, Torquay’s rugby league team, compete in the South Devon League.
For fun that the whole family can get involved in, check out the Babbacombe Festival. There you’ll find bowls matches, a display from the local cricket team and a traditional tug of war – all capped off with award-winning fish and chips from Hanbury’s Fish and Chips Restaurant.
