Maritime Events

With the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay, offering over 16 square miles of sheltered waters, it’s no surprise that the area is home to a number of maritime events. During the summer, the whole of the Riviera is transformed into a haven for boat enthusiasts, but there’s plenty for families to see and do – even if boats aren’t your thing.

Messing About in Boats

For maritime events, Torquay just can’t be beaten. Widely regarded as one of the best sailing events on the south coast, Torbay Week is hosted on the English Riviera every August. The event regularly attracts national and international sailing championships and crews of all classes compete for prestigious prizes including the Admirals Cup. Torbay Week coincides with the ever popular Torbay Royal Regatta, starting with a fancy dress sail in aid of the RNLI, and ending with the traditional Passage Race over to the Dartmouth Regatta. If you can’t make it to this spectacular event, the English Riviera holds many other maritime events throughout the year, including the exciting Offshore Racing Drivers Association Powerboats Championships.

Skiffs, Sea Boats and Cadets

The Paignton Regatta takes place in early August. With all the attractions entertaining visitors on land, it’s easy to forget the main events are on the water. 2011 saw visitors in their thousands come to watch the skiff, sea boat and sea cadet rowing competitions. 2012 promises to be an even better celebration!

Babbacombe holds its own regatta in June, as part of the Babbacombe Festival.
