Cockington’s popular October Food & Crafts Festival - Apple Day - will celebrate for the 20th year on Sunday 14th October, showcasing the best in local foods, handmade crafts, apple varieties – and ciders of course!
National Apple Day was founded by London charity Common Ground in 1990. The charity wanted to preserve and raise awareness of the alarming rate at which orchards were disappearing, along with the local varieties, the recipes, the songs, stories, pruning and wassailing. Of the 6,000 varieties of apple once grown in Britain, only nine are now readily available in the supermarkets. Modern farming methods, rapid transport and the import of cheap fruit from abroad along with new methods of horticultural production and storage, as well as new building and development, have lead the removal of many old orchards. Devon alone has lost 90% of its total orchards since 1965. Apple Day is an annual celebration of this wonderful diversity of apples and a way of conserving traditional orchards, fruit and traditions.
Apple Day is one of Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust's biggest fundraising events and all monies raised are ploughed back into conservation work across 1750 acres of green sites in Torbay including Berry Head National Nature Reserve, Cockington Country Park and Occombe Farm.
