Art & Literature
The English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay, has been inspiring authors and artists alike for decades. We’re incredibly proud of our artistic and literary heritage and you’ll find events and celebrations taking place throughout the year.
Agatha Christie Festival
Every year, Agatha Christie-themed Art & Literary events transform Torquay into a hive of activity and celebration. The author was born in the town and the English Riviera pays tribute to her life annually during the Agatha Christie Festival with an amazing array of displays and interactive entertainments. There are all-star theatre productions, a 1930s-themed fete, a sleuthing trail that will challenge your inner Marple and even murder-mystery dinners on steam trains. Even the Model Village in Babbacombe joins in the fun with miniature murder-mystery scenes.
Art and Poetry
The region’s artistic traditions also extend beyond Agatha Christie. The Poetry Festival takes place in October, giving visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the works of new and established poets with readings, book signings and public performances. Sleuths, April’s crime and thriller writing festival, is also a great opportunity to mingle with famous authors on the English Riviera.
There are numerous art exhibitions throughout the year that showcase work from new artists and attract big names such as Damien Hirst, with many works being borrowed from the Tate and Arts Council Collections. Art on the English Riviera takes place in the beautiful setting of Cockington throughout the summer months, with the very best in local and visiting art.
South Devon is brimming with cultural events; make sure you visit us.
