With its stunning coastline, internationally acclaimed countryside, architecture from the 1300s to the present day and unusual and diverse sites, the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay, has been the location of choice for TV and film units for many years, and is still popular with producers today.

Lights, Camera, Action!

The English Riviera has frequently acted as a home to the cast and crew of British-based and international TV and film units. In the past, it has presented a bounty of unique locations for the Monty Python team, Sense and Sensibility and more recently has acted as the backdrop to ‘Questions of the Heart’, an adaptation of the Rosamunde Pilcher novel.

Sci-fi fans will know that the subterranean spectacles of Kents Cavern have been used on more than one occasion by the BBC’s award-winning series, Dr Who, while the iconic scenes in the French Lieutenant’s Woman were also filmed here.

An Inspirational Backdrop

While the English Riviera has been used as a setting for many film and TV productions, its character and the many notable people who have lived here have also served as inspiration for scripts and screenplays that have gone on to find international success. The home of Agatha Christie, it has seen Poirot sleuthing its streets and, at the other end of the spectrum, the character of Basil Fawlty was based on a local hotelier.
