Along the coast from the busy fishing harbour of Brixham is Shoalstone Beach. This isn’t a sandy beach, but there are still plenty of activities to keep everyone happy. Head out on a fishing boat and catch your supper, explore the rock pools at low tide or take a walk along the coast. Nearby is Berry Head National Nature Reserve with plenty of opportunities to spot rare and endangered species, explore Napoleonic forts and a fascinating Geopark visitors’ centre. If all that leaves you feeling exhausted, situated on the edge of the beach is a great café with stunning views across the ocean.
Shoalstone Beach is also home to a 25 metre sea water swimming pool, one of the few left in the country. Built on a natural rock pool, it first opened to the public in 1896. It has seen a few changes over the years, but today the pool has been restored to its former glory.
The salt-water pool is free for all to use and is manned by lifeguards in the summer season. Once you’ve had a good splash around, hire a sun lounger or a deckchair and top up your tan. Snacks are available at the beach café if you get peckish. Or if you’ve brought your own refreshments you can enjoy your packed lunch in the picnic area.
