While on top of the water of the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay, there are plenty of chances to try a variety of different sports, beneath the waves there’s a whole new world to explore. Diving holidays are becoming more popular in South Devon’s waters, thanks to favourable and safe conditions and an abundance of marine life.

Under the Sea

With sheltered conditions, a bounty of underwater coves and the relative warmth provided by the Gulf Stream, the English Riviera is a popular site amongst diving enthusiasts. The region is home to a diverse range of underwater life including corals, sponges, sea-horses, sea anemones and plenty of fish. Fairy Cove, Babbacombe Beach and Brixham Breakwater offer near-perfect diving conditions for those new to the sport, whilst Berry Head, Shoalstone Reef and Thatcher’s Rock present more challenging dives.

In addition to the natural wonders to be found, there are a number of wrecks to be explored for those with a wreck diving certificate. The deeper waters of Lyme Bay hold a number of sunken ships, while those who dive ‘The Ridge’ near Brixham will be rewarded with the chance to explore the remains of a twin-engine aircraft.
