At the mouth of the River Dart, just a short journey from the English Riviera, stands the naval town of Dartmouth, a major destination for tourists from the UK and overseas.
Agatha Christie set her short story The Regatta Mystery - which features in the collection of stories The Problem at Pollensa Bay - in Dartmouth. The plot involves the disappearance of a famous diamond during the regatta and fair, and the Royal Castle Hotel is represented by the Royal George Hotel. Dartmouth also appears as Drymouth in Ordeal by Innocence, when the Greenway Quay bell is rung to summon the ferry to Drymouth.
The town features on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail through the English Riviera and South Devon, and her holiday home Greenway sits on the banks of the river not too far away. Ferry trips regularly run along the river to the house.
